Itinerary: 4-Day guided Bariloche hut to hut hiking tour
Day 1 — Bariloche → Refugio Frey
Your adventure begins with a scenic transfer to the Catedral base area. The trail to Refugio Frey climbs gently through native lenga forest and open valleys. As you ascend toward the Toncek Valley, the landscape transforms into a world of granite towers and sparkling water.
Refugio Frey sits beside a crystalline lagoon surrounded by dramatic spires—one of Patagonia’s most iconic mountain scenes. Enjoy a warm meal, sunset views, and the welcoming atmosphere of the refuge.

Hike: 8,6km, +750m, -900m
Day 2 — Refugio Frey → Refugio Jacob (Laguna Jakob)
Start the day with a steep climb out of the Frey cirque, followed by a spectacular ridge traverse overlooking deep valleys and shimmering lakes. This is one of the most dramatic sections of the entire journey.
After navigating rocky terrain and high passes, descend into the tranquil basin of Laguna Jakob, home to the remote Refugio Jacob. The refuge is set in a beautiful glacial amphitheater—an ideal spot to unwind after a rewarding day on the trail.
Highlights: High-ridge traverse, panoramic views, secluded Laguna Jakob.
Hike: 9km, +750m, -911m
Day 3 — Refugio Jacob → Refugio Laguna Negra
Today’s route leads through rugged alpine terrain, offering sweeping vistas at every turn. Traverse rocky passes and rolling ridgelines as you make your way toward the stunning Laguna Negra basin.
Perched above its dark mirror-like lake, Refugio Laguna Negra offers a cozy atmosphere and one of the most beautiful sunset spots of the trek.
Highlights: Remote high-mountain scenery, dramatic descent to Laguna Negra.
Hike: 12km, +1100m, – 1100m
Day 4 — Refugio Laguna Negra → Bariloche
On the final day of our trek, we’ll start early with a scenic loop around Laguna Negra, navigating sections of rock and rugged mountain terrain. The route then continues upward through rocky slopes until we reach the base of B. Willis Hill. From there, we skirt around its edge and descend into the beautiful Goye Valley before beginning a steep ascent through a natural gully toward Pico Turista (2,040 m a.s.l.) on Cerro López.
Expect beautiful views over Nahuel Huapi Lake, Bariloche and some of Chiles volcanos from the top. From this summit point, the remainder of the journey is downhill. Midway, we’ll pause for a short rest at Refugio López before continuing on foot to the end of the trail, where our private transfer will be waiting to take us back to San Carlos de Bariloche.
Highlights: Laguna Negra sunrise, panoramic viewpoints, return to Bariloche.

This is a moderately challenging to difficult multi-day trek suitable for hikers with prior mountain experience. The route involves steep ascents and descents, rocky terrain, exposed ridgelines, and occasional use of hands for stability. Daily hiking times range from 6–9 hours with significant elevation gain and loss.
Participants should be comfortable carrying a medium pack, walking on uneven ground, and spending consecutive days on the trail. No technical climbing equipment is required in summer conditions.
Best Season to Hike the Bariloche hut to hut hiking tour
The ideal time to complete the Frey–Jacob–Laguna Negra traverse is:
December to April (Southern Hemisphere summer & early autumn)
During this period you can expect:
- Stable weather and longer daylight hours
- Snow-free passes and easier navigation
- Open and fully staffed mountain refugios
Outside this window, early-season snow, icy slopes, and unpredictable weather can make the traverse significantly more demanding.
