Arrival Day to Zermatt

Night at a Hotel in Zermatt

Day 1: Zermatt to Trift mountain guesthouse


The charming and historic Trift mountain guesthouse is run by the great-granddaughter of its builder together with her husband, a fifth-generation mountain guide, and partly with the help of their children.  
Ascent from Zermatt (1,620 m) via Schweifinen to the Trift mountain inn.
Difference in altitude: + 909 m
Distance: 5.8 km

Day 2: Trift mountain guesthouse to Schönbielhütte

“Dr Scheen Biel”, the old name of the sunny terrace at the back of the Mutt valley, is the place where the Schönbielhütte is located, the starting point for breathtaking snow and climbing tours, easily accessible via impressive hikes.
Ascent to the Höhbalmen and Hohliecht viewpoints (2,675 m) and over the lateral moraine of the Zmutt Glacier to the Schönbielhütte (2,694 m). Postcard view of the Matterhorn from an unusual perspective.
Difference in altitude: +780 m, – 430 m
Distance: 11.3 km

Day 3: Schönbiel hut to Hörnli hut

Under the north face of the Matterhorn to the Hörnlihütte (3,260 m). This is where the Matterhorn climbers start via the Hörnli ridge to the Matterhorn summit. If you get up early in the morning, you can watch the headlamp parade of alpinists.
Difference in altitude: + 1105 m, – 540 m
Distance: 13.2 km

Day 4: Hörnli hut to Gandegg hut

Clad in rustic Swiss stone pine, the Gandegg hut not only offers more than 135 years of history but also a unique view of the Breithorn and the Theodul Glacier.
Along the foot of the Matterhorn via the Matterhorn Glacier Trail and under the east face of the Matterhorn to the Gandegghütte (3,030 m). Imposing view of the Gorner Glacier, Monte Rosa and Breithorn.
Difference in altitude: + 430 m, – 660 m
Distance: 9 km

Day 5: Gandegg hut to Zermatt


Descent to Zermatt (1,620 m).
Difference in altitude: – 1415 m
Distance: 8.9 km

How to get to Zermatt


Public transportation
By train to the Matterhorn village: 31⁄2 hours from Zurich airport or 4 hours from Geneva airport. Visp is the transfer point to the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway. From Visp, the railroad line runs through the St.Niklaus Valley, past small, idyllic villages to Zermatt.
Zermatt is also the start or end point of the world-famous Glacier Express panoramic train journey (St. Moritz / Davos – Zermatt).

Zermatt is car-free. Access for private vehicles is only permitted as far as Täsch (5 km before Zermatt). The Täsch – Zermatt road is closed to public traffic. The onward journey to Zermatt is either by private cab or by shuttle train. The trains run every 20 minutes. After around 12 minutes, the journey ends at the station square in Zermatt.
