Accommodation Tea Houses for Annapurna Base Camp Trek
On the Annapurna Base Camp Trek we stay in lodges known as teahouses. These are family businesses, each is unique, and often quite charming! A big part of the charm of trekking in Nepal is staying in independently owned teahouses, known locally as bhatti. Tea houses are often large buildings with separate bed rooms, communal lounges, running water and wifi. When you stay at a teahouse, you’re helping to sustain a rural community. For the smaller settlements, especially, teahouses are the economic lifeblood that keep them going.
The bedrooms are basic, but serve their purpose well. Occasionally there may be ensuite toilets but that isn’t the norm. Mostly they have simple twin beds built from plywood and with a basic but comfortable mattress. There may be a small light but it is often solar powered. It will only provide enough light to get organised and you’ll need your torch for reading and other tasks.
Most teahouse bedrooms are unheated and can get cold at night. Sometimes the bedrooms have blankets or quilts but you’ll usually want your sleeping bag as well.
Toilets
Some of the teahouses in the lower regions have western-style flush toilets. Others, higher up, might have western-style toilets, but you need to pour in a bucket of water before flushing.
Meals and Beverages
When it comes to meals, teahouses have menus that let you choose your breakfasts and dinners from a decent range of options. All meals are included:
| Common breakfast options | Common dinner options |
|---|---|
| Porridge | Vegetable soup |
| Eggs (omelette, boiled or scrambled) | Pizza |
| Pancakes with fruit and honey | Noodles with veg and chicken or beef |
| Toast with butter, honey and jam | Dal bhat (rice and lentils) |
| Vegetable soup | Vegetable curry with rice |
| Cereals and muesli | Burgers |
| Chapatti (like a roti) | Dumplings |
| Juice | Pasta |
You need to pay for your hot drinks like tea, coffee and hot chocolate at teahouses. They usually cost around US$1 to $3 each.
Weather and Temperatures for Annapurna Base Camp Trek
Temperatures during the Trek range from 10 °C to 20 °C during the day and drop close to 0 °C at night. The crisp mountain air can send a chill through you, but the breathtaking views ignite a warm fire within.
November is the perfect month for this tour as blue, clear sky can be expected.
