Dates: Daily, in the winter season, we offer this hike as a snow shoe tour
Thur cascade discovery – what to expect
“The 23-meter high Thur waterfalls and the cow pasture of Gamplüt are the highlights of this hiking route.”
We start at the post office in Unterwasser and shortly after you stand mesmerized before this enormous natural spectacle. The clean water cascades down from steep rock faces. Especially when the snow melts on the nearby mountains, or after long periods of rain, the Thur Waterfalls are a marvelous sight to behold. The trail along the waterfalls includes three observation decks.
Further up we pick nick near the Säntisthur river with the Säntis mountain in the back. There are many barbecue spots available underneath old pine trees. The perfect spot for the kids to play in beautiful nature.
- A perfect hike for families
- A stunning waterfall that dries out if there is no rain and brings tons of water after rainy days or snow melt
- Enjoy panoramic views over the 7 Churfirsten peaks
- Daily starts /in winter it’s a beautiful snow shoe hike
A delicious lunch break
After a delicious lunch with local organic products like fresh cheese, “Mostbröckli” (pieces of dried thin cut beef), vegetables and a loaf of St.Galler bread the hike continues up trough the forest to the grassy pastures of Gamplüt.
In summer there will be many cows and in winter it’s a quite, snowy paradise.
Now we’re only a short distance away from a fresh drink or a hot Glühwein at the cosy Gamplüt mountain restaurant.
From here you decide if you want to ride down to Wildhaus with the small, red cable cars that run with solar power, hike, or cruise down with Trottinett-scooters. Maybe even you want to extend your hike and walk up to Fros and down the Flürentobel.

How to get to Unterwasser
We strongly recommend to get to the Toggenburg valley by the great public transportation service. Take a train to Buchs (SG) in the Rhein valley or to Wattwil/Nesslau in the Toggenburg. From there you can hop on a post bus that leaves towards Unterwasser each half hour. Do the same to get back. Eastern Switzerland’s largest winter sports area is just one hour from the airport and Zurich.
About the area
The Toggenburg valley lies in the Kanton of St.Gallen in the eastern part of Switzerland, near the boarder to Liechtenstein and Austria. Nestled between the mighty Säntis (2501m) massif and the seven Churfirsten peaks, the resorts of Alt St. Johann, Unterwasser and Wildhaus (1100m) are among the highest-lying municipalities in Toggenburg.
